Owning a pottery studio-shop is, in many ways, a dream come true. Creating in a space open to the world, feeling the life of the village, welcoming curious gazes and spontaneous conversations. It is warm, vibrant, and deeply human.
But behind the windows, there is a balance to be found. A studio-shop is both a place of production and a place of welcome. It is a space of focus for artisanal creation, but also a space for meeting and sharing. Learning to juggle these two worlds—the studio turned toward the outside and the time required for creation—is a daily challenge for any ceramic artist.
When people see me working with clay, focused yet calm, it may seem peaceful, almost meditative. From the outside, artisanal creation does not always look like work, but every gesture, every reflection, and every experiment is an essential part of the process. These moments of silence are when pieces come to life, when we test new forms, explore different techniques, and refine our craft. That is exactly what being an artist at work in their studio is.
Today, more than ever, we are taking the time to prepare for the year ahead, applying to new craft fairs and ceramic exhibitions, and exploring new collaborations. We are slowing down the pace to rethink our production, test new forms, discover better ways of working, and find a new balance in the studio. It is a time of fertile reflection, indispensable for continuing artisanal creation and handmade pottery.
Having a studio-shop means learning to balance the visible and the invisible, sharing and concentration. Protecting these moments of silent work allows us to then be fully present to welcome, exchange, and create with intention.
