The potter's gift guide: ideas tested, approved, and loved in my studio

If there is a potter in your life, chances are you are already thinking about gifting them… pottery. And that’s perfect; we love it when pottery comes back as a gift! But if you want to go a little further than the obvious, here are some of my favorite ideas: things I love in my studio, that I would have loved to have when I was starting out, and that I still want today (haha).

And SURPRISE! We have a beautiful little selection of tools and glazes available at the studio thanks to our friends at Pottery Supply House. So, I’ve prepared a little promotion for you: 10% off our tools and equipment with code CADEAU2025 if you purchase them via our website before December 21, 2025!

1. Studio essentials:
Tools, glazes, and more: the possibilities in the studio are endless. With the right tools, everything becomes possible!

  • A good trimming tool. My favorite: the Euclids trimming tool. It’s an all-stainless steel version of their popular aluminum-handled tool, with finer heads. Bonus: it doesn't rust! Get 10% off with code CADEAU2025 by purchasing it on our website: Small stainless steel trimming tool

  • A potter's gauge. The true MVP of my studio. Mine was gifted to me by a potter when they retired, and it’s the secret to my consistent series. It’s a gift that is both practical and meaningful. Here is a good one from Pottery Supply House with two fully adjustable arms: Adjustable throwing gauge

  • A good apron. A potter can never have too many aprons. I have at least five in the studio, each for a different occasion or mood. My favorite remains a simple half-apron. It doesn't protect much, but it’s comfortable, light, and lets me move freely. Like a little cotton hug every time I tie it on. Here is a very nice professional model from Pottery Supply House with a center split for optimal comfort at the wheel: Claypron Potter's Apron

2. Dream tools: for potters who already have everything (or almost everything)
To spoil a potter (or yourself!), consider Mudtools or Garrity Tools. They are true jewels for the studio, the kind of tools you admire even before using them. These brands are a little luxury, but they are exactly the kind of gift every potter secretly dreams of.

  • Garrity Tools. Hand-carved from beautiful hardwoods, they have a unique tactile feel. These are tools that make you want to throw just for the pleasure of holding them. You will find a lovely selection at Pottery Supply House: Garrity Tools

  • Mudtools. Ribs and sponges of impeccable quality that really last a long time. A real pleasure to use! You will find a lovely selection at Pottery Supply House: Mudtools

3. The potter’s quiet essentials
Some of the most useful things in the studio aren't really tools. Sometimes, a gift that simplifies daily life or helps maintain creativity is just as precious.

  • Hand cream. Pottery is wonderful… until your hands start to crack from all the water and clay. My favorite? The Hemp Hand Protector from The Body Shop. Light but very absorbent, perfect for restoring a little softness to our potter hands. (And let’s be honest: every potter has a cream hidden somewhere in the studio.)

  • Studio notebook. Keeping notes might seem trivial, but it’s a real asset. Jotting down glaze recipes, firing observations, or sketches allows you to replicate your successes… and above all, avoid repeating your mistakes. Over time, this notebook becomes a sort of ceramic diary, a witness to the evolution of your practice.

  • Books that inspire and nourish the practice. Books are magic at your fingertips. I recently found a second-hand copy of Céramique : répertoire de formes by Grégoire Scalabre and it’s a goldmine of inspiration. It doesn't have to be technical: sometimes, a simple book of shapes, an artist's essay, or a potter’s memoir is enough to nourish the imagination and reignite creativity.

4. Gifting an experience: private or group lessons
Nothing beats the gift of an experience. Giving a private pottery lesson or a group class is a thoughtful way to share a passion for ceramics. Discover the class options or sign up for the waiting list to be the first to know when registrations for our classes open.

5. Gift cards: the ultimate flexible option
It might seem obvious, but it is often the most flexible and appreciated gift. Our gift cards can be used for everything we offer at the studio: small tools, glazes, firing services, private or group lessons, and of course our creations. They are available online or directly in the shop.

6. And of course… pottery!
If you have a potter in your life, chances are you are already gifting them a piece of pottery. And that’s perfect! But why not choose a piece that might inspire them in turn? We often offer our creations with love, and we love it when that same love comes back in the form of a unique piece. See our collection.
