This two-session workshop offers an exploration of the meeting between clay and willow: two natural materials shaped by very different gestures, rhythms, and traditions.

During the first session, at the Luloba Céramique studio, participants will be guided by Sophie Manessiez, a professional ceramicist and designer, to create a hand-built ceramic object designed to accommodate woven elements. They will explore form, balance, and voids, while considering how the clay piece will interact with an organic material after firing. The Luloba Céramique team will then handle the glazing, firing, and transportation of the piece to the second studio.

Four weeks later, the group will reconvene at the Saule et Garance studio, just a few doors down from the pottery studio. This second session will be guided by Laurence Thiffault, the basket maker behind the brand Sweet Mama Grass. She will introduce you to working with willow and other natural materials in order to create a basketry addition integrated directly into the ceramic piece. Participants will discover how flexible, natural plant materials can extend, soften, or contrast with the solidity of the clay.

This workshop offers a true dialogue between disciplines and an immersion into mixed media, where clay hand-building meets plant weaving. At the intersection of the functional and the sculptural, participants will leave with one or two unique pieces and a new understanding of the possibilities offered by crossing techniques.

No prior experience in ceramics or basketry is required, just curiosity and a desire to explore.
